September is one of the best times to be on the water here in Crystal River. Not only is the inshore bite heating up as fish transition into their fall patterns, but scalloping season is still open...giving families and anglers a chance to enjoy the best of both worlds.

           Inshore Fishing

Redfish have been the main target this month. Schools are starting to bunch up along the mangroves, oyster bars, and creek mouths, especially on higher tides. Live pinfish, cut mullet, and shrimp under a popping cork are all producing. With the fall mullet run approaching, expect the bite to stay strong and only get better as we move deeper into the month.

Trout fishing has also been steady on the grass flats in 3–5 feet of water. Early mornings are best for topwater action, while shrimp and soft plastics under corks have been the ticket as the sun climbs higher.

Snook are showing up more consistently early and late in the day around deeper mangrove shorelines and creeks with moving water. As water temperatures slowly cool, their feeding windows are only going to increase.

           Nearshore Action

The nearshore bite has been fun with Spanish mackerel, jacks, and bluefish firing around the rock piles and deeper flats. A chum bag keeps the action steady, and spoons or free-lined shrimp will bend the rods all day.

           Scalloping

Scalloping season is still in full swing, and the crowds have started to thin out, making it an even better time to go. We’ve been finding them in 4–6 feet of water over healthy grass beds. The water is still clear enough in most spots, and with a little searching, limits are very achievable. It’s a great family activity!

With the summer heat finally easing up and the water beginning to cool, the inshore bite has been firing off across the grass flats and mangrove edges. These temperature changes make October one of the best months to be on the water here,

Redfish have been schooling up nicely on the incoming tides, especially around mangrove points. Look for those golden backs pushing wakes early in the morning or tailing on the flats when the tide is low. Cut mullet, live pinfish, and shrimp have all been producing solid fish.

Speckled trout are starting to move up shallower as the water temperatures drop. The best action has been over sandy potholes mixed in with grass in 3–5 feet of water. Soft plastics under a popping cork or a slow-sinking jerkbait have been hard to beat when the bite gets tough.

Snook are still hanging around the backcountry creeks and river mouths. As the cold fronts start to roll in later in the month, they’ll begin transitioning toward deeper river systems for the winter. Early morning topwater plugs or soft plastic on a jig head bouncing off the bottom.

And while the fall inshore bite is hot, keep an eye out for what’s coming next—sheepshead and black drum are beginning to make their move back inshore. As the water cools and the stone crab traps start showing up, expect those fish to stack up around rock piles, bridge pilings, and channel edges.

Overall, October brings some of the best variety and action of the year here in Crystal River—whether you’re poling the flats or easing along the mangroves, now’s the time to get out and enjoy it before the winter tides settle in.

Redfish are around in good numbers. Fish the west points and east points on the low water with live or cut pinfish, cut mullet, or live shrimp. As the tide comes in, the fish will be seeking shade. Cut bait fished on a jighead. Soak the bait long enough to release the scent, usually for 5-10 minutes, then move on until you find feeding fish. The high water bite has been best as of late.

Snook are starting to show better numbers, wise, and will continue to. With only a few weeks left until opening season, this is a good time to establish a pattern. Cut bait, especially ladyfish or large pins, have been effective during the heat of the day, while live baits such as finger mullet, pinfish, and mud minnows are best early morning or late evening. I like big mud minnows personally.

Trout continue to be caught both on flats and on harder, light-colored bottom. Live shrimp or soft plastic jigs have been the baits of choice. Making long drifts and moving around at different depths will help locate the larger trout. Patience is needed this time of year, but once we move into September and October, it’ll get better.

Scalloping has been the best I’ve seen in years! Good numbers all around, working the best part of the tide. If you can get out there when the sun is high and the tide is slow and barely moving, then you’ll have success. It has been a very good summer so far, both in terms of fishing and weather, and the best is yet to come. Snook and Grouper season opens on September 1st.

and now you're wondering what to wear. Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re planning a deep sea fishing trip, inshore saltwater fishing, or a fun morning on the boat, wearing the right clothes can enhance your fishing experience. Dressing for Your Fishing Trip in the Sunshine State

When you go on a fishing trip, you want to feel good and move freely. That means dressing appropriately for the weather and activity. Think about the time of year, whether you’re in FL, or heading out somewhere else.

You’re going to be outside most of the day, so make sure your clothes can protect you from the sun, rain, and even fish slime. Pick lightweight, breathable clothing that can dry quickly and keep you cool in warm weather, or keep you warm during cold weather.

It’s a good idea to bring layers — outer layers like a sweatshirt or waterproof jacket can help when it gets chilly. If it’s hot and humid, go with short sleeves and loose pants or shorts. A t-shirt works great, and don’t forget your swimsuit if you plan to take a dip!

Understand the Weather Forecast for Your Fishing Charter

Before you pack, always check the weather forecast. Rain can pop up fast, especially during summer fishing months. Pack rain gear like a jacket or poncho. A good rain jacket helps with unexpected rain showers and keeps your clothes to wear dry. Even if you don’t get wet from the rain, waves or splashes on the deck might soak you.

If it’s breezy, a jacket or windbreaker can keep you from getting too cold. A breeze off the water might feel good, but it can cool you down fast.

Choose the Right Shoes for the Boat

When it comes to shoes, safety and comfort matter. You’ll be moving around on a wet deck, so choose non-slip or deck shoes with good rubber soles that offer traction, similar to the

You might also want to wear socks if you're wearing boat shoes. They help with comfort and can keep your feet warm if it gets chilly.

           Headwear and Sunglasses

Protecting your face and neck is important when you’re out under the sun for hours. A wide-brimmed hat is perfect. It gives shade and helps protect your skin from sunburn. A baseball hat works too, but not as well.

Add a pair of polarized sunglasses, like

           Sun Safety Tips

If you’re heading out on a fishing charter, comfort and safety matter. Bring polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce glare on the water—thanks to the science of polarization (waves). A hat, sunscreen (you’ve probably already thought about packing sunblock), insect repellent, seasickness medication, and a jacket for unexpected weather make all the difference. You’re leaving the dock early, so plan accordingly and pack with energy in mind.

Picking the Right Pants and Layers to Wear

Think about the type of pants you’ll wear. Go for ones that are comfortable, quick-drying, and give you room to move. You’ll want to reel in fish, walk the deck, and move around the boat easily.

If it’s cooler, layer up with outer layers. A sweatshirt, vest, or light jacket can help you keep warm. When the day heats up, you can peel them off.

           Clothes for Every Season

Fishing happens in every season, and your clothing should change with it.

           Summer Fishing

During summer fishing, it’s hot and humid, so dress light. A UV-protective t-shirt, lightweight pants or shorts, and breathable shoes work great. Don’t forget sunscreen, hat, and polarized sunglasses.

           Winter Fishing

Winter fishing can be cold, especially early in the morning. Dress in layers so you can keep warm but still move. Bring a waterproof jacket and maybe a pair of gloves, too.

           Warm vs. Cold Weather

In warm weather, focus on keeping cool, staying dry, and sun safety. In cold weather, wear layers, thicker pants, and bring a jacket. Always check the weather forecast before heading to the dock.

           What Else Should You Bring?

Besides what you wear, there are a few more things to pack. Here’s a list to make sure you’re ready:

            Sunscreen

            Hat

            Polarized sunglasses

            Extra shirt or jacket

            Swimsuit

            Extra socks

            Towel (if you get wet)

            Snacks and water

Camera or phone (in a waterproof case)

Any personal items (medicine, wipes, etc.)

A small packing list can make sure you’re not stuck wishing you had brought that one thing.

Inside the Cabin and on the Deck

On a charter fishing trip, you might spend time inside the cabin if there’s one, but most of your day will be on the deck. That's where the action happens. Whether you’re handling bait, watching the rod, or fighting a fish, it can get messy.

That’s why the right clothes really matter. They’ll protect your skin, keep you safe from slips, and make it easier to move when things get exciting. And believe us, once a fish bites, you don’t want to be adjusting your clothes!

If you’re on a charter fishing boat in FL, you’ll likely have warm weather and maybe some rain showers. If you’re going on a deep sea fishing trip, expect more movement and wind — so wear layers and protect yourself from the elements.

Always ask your charter captain what’s recommended. They know the local conditions and can help you plan. Booking with an experienced charter makes your day safer and more fun.

So, let’s recap a few quick tips:

Dress in layers you can add or remove.

Use sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a hat to stay protected.

Wear non-slip shoes with good rubber soles.

Bring rain gear just in case.

Check the weather forecast and time of year.

            Don’t forget water and snacks!

Fishing in Florida is great year-round, but the best time for a family fishing excursion is during the fall and spring months when temperatures are pleasant, and fish are actively biting. The key is to call ahead and check conditions before booking.

Inshore and Nearshore Fishing – What’s the Difference?

Inshore and nearshore fishing charters offer different experiences. Inshore trips focus on calm waters close to shore, ideal for kids and families. Nearshore charters take you further out but still keep you within sight of land, offering access to bigger fish.

Private vs. Group Charters: Which is Right for You?

A private charter is best for families wanting a personalized experience. You’ll have the boat to yourself, and the captain will tailor the trip to your group’s needs. Group excursions can be fun but may not provide as much hands-on instruction for kids.

Spring brings warmer waters, making fish more active and aggressive. Many species feed heavily to prepare for the summer months. This is a great time for inshore fishing, with plenty of action in the shallows. Snook begin moving out of their winter hiding spots, redfish are active on the flats, and speckled trout are feeding in seagrass beds. Sheepshead, lingering from winter, can still be found near docks and reefs. Many species feed heavily to prepare for the summer months. A fishing charter is a guided fishing trip led by a professional captain and crew that makes recreational angling experience possible for all skill levels. The charter provides everything you need, including fishing boats, tackle (which includes rods, reels, and other necessary gear), bait, and sometimes even food and drinks. The purpose of a fishing charter is to help anglers, whether experienced or new, navigate the water efficiently, locate fish species, and enhance their fishing experience with expert guidance. There are different types of fishing charters available depending on your fishing goals and location, providing a diverse range of options for every fisherman.

A good captain possesses precise local knowledge and knows where to find fish under different conditions, whether it's inshore, nearshore, backcountry, drift fishing or jetty fishing. Their experience and ability to adapt to changing weather and water conditions can make a huge difference in the success of your trip.

Check with your captain on specifically what they will provide and what you should bring because it could vary slightly from charter to charter.

How Much Does a Fishing Charter Cost?

The cost of a fishing charter depends on various factors, including the type of equipment provided and the duration. The length of the charter is a major pricing factor, with full-day costing more than half-day excursions. Offshore fishing charters are generally more expensive than inshore due to higher fuel costs and additional maintenance requirements for larger boats.

Paying the team also contribute to the cost, as experienced guides are paid for their knowledge and expertise. The average cost of a fishing charter can range from $300 to $2,500, depending on location, boat type, duration and what you are looking to catch.

Tipping Recommendations for Your Fishing Charter

Tipping is a customary practice when booking a fishing charter, as the captain and mate (if the charter has one) rely on gratuities as part of their income. A standard tip for a fishing charter is between 15% and 20% of the total cost of the trip. If the service was exceptional, tipping on the higher end is a great way to show appreciation for the mate's efforts in providing top-notch equipment and guidance.

For example, if your fishing trip costs $600, a 15% tip would be $90, while at 20% it would be $120. If multiple mate's are assisting, the captain often distributes this between them.

If you’re unsure about tipping expectations, asking the captain or checking with the booking service beforehand can provide guidance on the appropriate amount to show appreciation. While tipping is not mandatory, it is a great way to recognize the effort the mate puts into making your trip enjoyable and successful as they are often working hours before and after the charter.

(Argopecten irradians) are small shellfish that live in the seagrass beds along Florida’s Gulf Coast. They are known for their sweet, tender meat and are a favorite for people who enjoy scalloping in places like Homosassa, Ozello, Crystal River and Steinhatchee. These little creatures have tiny blue eyes that help them see, and they can swim by quickly opening and closing their shells. Scalloping in Florida is a fun summer activity, and it also helps scientists learn about the health of the ocean since scallops need clean water and healthy seagrass to survive.

Scalloping is easy if you have the right skills and tools. Using good snorkeling gear helps you see better underwater and spot scallops more easily. Scallops like to hide in seagrass beds, especially turtle grass and manatee grass. Turtle grass has wide blades where young scallops attach and grow. Manatee grass is thinner and easier to see through, but it usually has fewer scallops. A mesh bag lets water drain while keeping your catch fresh.

When looking for scallops, swim with the tide to save energy and cover more ground. Look for their tiny blue eyes, which shine when they reflect light. Try the swish and scoop method—wave your hand over the seagrass to make scallops move, then scoop them up.

Keeping Florida’s scallop population healthy is crucial for preserving marine habitats. Never discard scallop shells in inshore waters or rivers—this can harm the ecosystem. Instead, return them offshore where they belong or dispose of them properly. Harvest responsibly by following FWC bag limits, which vary by region and time of year.

The Nature Coast is home to some of the best scalloping grounds in Florida. Crystal River, Homosassa, and Ozello stand out for their clear water and abundant bay scallops. For a scalloping charter, launching from Ozello Keys Marina offers the shortest ride to the scalloping areas, maximizing your time in the water.

A little planning can make your trip even better. Pack a snorkel, mask, fins, gloves, mesh bags, and a cooler. Keep your scallops on ice or in a mesh bag to keep them fresh. If it’s your first time, booking a scallop tour or hiring a guide can make your trip easier and more fun. Swimming with the tide helps save energy and makes it easier to spot scallops as you float over seagrass beds.
